Letters from Lewis: Q&A (2)/(3)

Question (2): 'Why do you believe in Christianity?'

C.S. - "I believe in Christianity as I believe that the Sun has risen, not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else."

Question (3): 'Can we lose our salvation'?

This question can be answered in the light of Psalm 32:
"Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered.
Blessed is the man against whom the
Lord counts no iniquity,
and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
For when I kept silent, my bones
wasted away
through my groaning all day long.
For day and night your hand was heavy
upon me;
my strength was dried up as by the
heat of summer.
I acknowledged my sin to you,
and I did not cover my iniquity;
I said, "I will confess my transgressions
to the Lord,"
and you forgave the iniquity of my sin..."

Through the Cross we have forgiveness only. It is nothing of our own doing, rather nothing of our own "covering", for Christ did it once and for all. He is our salvation, He alone is worthy and perfect to forgive sin itself. We confess our sins through the divine reality 'we are dead to sin and alive to God'. We have confession because in the flesh we ultimately are imperfect humans asking for a perfect Mediator to 'wash us whiter than snow'. IF Jesus was not the 'I am' we are all most to be pitied. IF Jesus did not rise again we men and women are to be pitied. IF Jesus did not 'become our sin' we are already disillusioned. IF Jesus did not conquer death, we have a false Hope. BUT He did...therefore Rejoice knowing you have been saved alone by His doing, rather His "covering" of sins. You have been sealed with 'the promised Holy Spirit' and He alone holds you on His Hand of Salvation. 'Fret not it tends to lead only to evil.'
